6 Funny French movies for French learners

Funny French movies

Watching French movies is a great way to practice your French and learn some new vocabulary (that is, if you do it right). But maybe you’re looking for a good movies? What about funny French movies?

Here are a few you might want to consider if you are learning French.

Comedies are good for intermediate learners. They might be a bit too much for beginners though. Joking is a skill you’ll learn when you develop your French. If you are a beginner, try romantic comedies. They should be easier to understand.

Intouchables, 2011

One of the most popular French movies of all times, and for good reason, as this is a beautiful story of friendship.

Philippe is a rich tetraplegic man. And he needs to hire someone to help him. Driss candidates… for a signature to prove he is really looking for a job. He is far from ideal. Yet, he might just be who Philippe really needs.

Le Diner de Cons, 1998

Every Wednesday Pierre and his friends organise a ‘diner de con’. A sort of competition where you need to find the dummest person and bring him to dinner. Pierre is certain to win this week. Because he found the perfect candidate. Except nothing is going according to plan…

A classic French comedy! Pretty much any French person would be able to tell you who Juste LeBlanc is.

Les Visiteurs, 1993

Another great classic: Les Visiteurs. Rather goofy and weird, but hilarious.

In 1123, Godefroy de Montmirail, a fierce and loyal vassal of the King of France, accidentally kills his betrothed’s father. In an attempt to go back in time, something goes wrong, and he is propelled into the year 1992…

Il a déjà tes yeux, 2016

Got to tell you one thing: French comedies like to tell stories about conventions. Often making fun and poking at sensitive topics. This movie is no exception.

Paul and Sali are the happiest people on earth. They are finally going to adopt a little boy: Benjamin. Their families are preparing his arrival, but couldn’t be more shocked when they see Benjamin for the first time. He’s a wonderfully cute… white baby. How is the world going to react to a black couple adopting a white baby?

La Folie des Grandeurs, 1971

Louis de Funès et Yves Montand, two giants of French culture, come together in this classic comedy : La Folie des Grandeurs.

As a child, this was one of my favourite funny French movies.

Don Sallustre is a Spanish noble that is… not so noble. Hypocrite, mean, stingy,… he shouldn’t be the Minister of Finances, but he is. And it looks like he’s going to need to play a very dangerous game if he wants to stay in the good favours of the King.

Astérix et Obélix - Mission Cléopâtre, 2002

Do you know Astérix? A little Gaul soldier from a little village that still resist the invasion of the romans. Great read if you love comics!

This movie is based on one of his adventures, where he is going to help Cleopatra win a bet against Cesar…

And it’s HILARIOUS. Warning though: lots of play on words.

Where to watch those movies?

You should be able to rent most of those funny French movies on Amazon, or the Apple library.

If not, some will be accessible on Netflix (depending on your country).
