9 great French romantic comedies for French learners

French romantic comedies

I am guilty. Guilty because I love to watch romantic comedies…Yeah, I’m a serious girl. Yeah, I like to nerd about languages and learning and business and plenty of other things…

But damn, watching a cheesy romantic comedy? I’m in.

The thing is…. I’m also a French teacher. So how about learning a bit of French at the same time?

Here are 9 French romantic comedies you should watch.

Arnacoeur - A classic tale of 'I didn't mean to fall in love'

Not only is this movie gorgeous to look at, it’s also going to make your insides melt with cheesiness.

You know those stories where the character doesn’t mean to fall in love but can’t help to?

Well this is one of those stories.

People call Alex when they want something specific. Very specific. Because Alex is a professional couple breaker. For the right price, he will seduce women so that they stop loving someone is not right for them. He’s very good at it.

But this time, the mission is a little bit more difficult…

Also, helps that the main character is played by handsome Romain Durris... 😉

Paris-Manhattan - Woody Allen matchmaking in Paris

I watched this one on Netflix a couple of weeks ago.

And, I was really surprised. It’s funny, it’s sweet, it makes you feel good,… Everything you want a good comedy to do.

The concept is also interesting. Alice, played by the gorgeous Alice Taglioni, is single. She is taking over her father’s little pharmacy, and her whole family seems to think she needs to stop watching Woody Allen’s movies so much and start a family…

Of course, she’s going to meet an interesting but infuriating Patrick Bruel (actually a famous French singer), who will make her see things.. differently.

I recommend this movie to anyone who likes their man to be witty 😉

If French romantic comedies aren't your thing, there are other kinds of movies!

Un peu, beaucoup, aveuglément - Life in a small Parisian flat

A classic “I hate you, I love you.”

I like this comedy especially because it shows a view of Paris that is not so much idealised.

Machine and Machin are neighbours, well… not exactly. They are living in two flats, in two separate buildings, but with a wall in common.

Expect this wall is thin… Very thin. And this is going to be a problem for both Machine, a professional pianist, and Machin, who needs all the calm he can get to create new games.

A blind war begins.

Probably one of my favourite modern French romantic comedies!

Hors de Prix - In need of cash, and love.

What’s the price of love?

Irène knows. That’s her trade. So when she sees Jean in the bar of a world-class hotel – she steps in. He is clearly a millionaire who needs a beautiful women on his arm. Except, Jean is far from a millionaire…

His trade is bartending. And he cannot afford Irène’s luxurious taste.

I watched this movie for the first time when I was 14. And I didn’t understand it all, but still loved it.

If you like Amélie, you’ll recognise Audrey Tautou.

Populaire - Typing her way to a beautiful love story

Romantic comedy and historical? I’m on the limit of hysteria.

This one is one of my favourite French movies, and I bet it can become yours too.

Louis is looking for a secretary. He ends up hiring a young, inexperienced, Rose. Who is quickly making a mess of the place… But she has an extraordinary skill. She types faster than anyone.

Could this be her ticket to something bigger?

Romain Durris again in this one! Enjoy 😊

Jeux d'Enfants - Beware of the games you play

Cap ou pas cap? (Are you capable or not capable?).

That’s a dare game Sophie and Julien are playing since kindergarten.

A dangerous one, who will transform an innocent game into a source of growing pain. It will destroy the best things they build, but it will also give them something better, even if it’s not obvious at first.

This is NOT a typical, ‘everything is beautiful’, kind of movie. There’s action, real danger and a bit of perversion.

But it’s one of the most classic French romantic comedies.

Jour J - Wedding planner, the French way

What would you do if you had to organise the wedding of a man you slept with last night?

Well, probably not what Juliette did… But then again, she’s struggling for cash, so it’s not like she had a choice. And Alexia, the bride, might be difficult but her father is loaded.

It’s light, and fun. Something for those nights where you want to feel good, but also don’t want to think much.

Un homme à la hauteur - It's how you use it that counts

We all dreamt of our Prince Charming.

He will be strong. He will be handsome. He will be nice. He will be loving. He will be rich. He will be tall…

But what if he wasn’t? Could you love someone who is perfect but only missing a few inches? And I’m talking about height!

I was actually nicely surprised by this movie. The premise is not that sexy. I mean, yeah yeah appearances are not important… We get it. But it’s more than that actually.

Worth a watch!

La Doublure - Forced to live with a model

François Pignon is an ordinary man. With an ordinary job. And an ordinary best friend. Until the affair of a powerful man and a famous top model is revealed in the papers with a picture.

To save his reputation, and his marriage, the businessman hires François, who appears on the picture, to pretend to be his lover’s boyfriend.

Turns out, it’s not so easy to be the pretend boyfriend of a gorgeous and famous woman.

The name of François Pignon is recurring in Veber’s movies. You will find François Pignon’s in Le Dîner de Con, and L’Emmerdeur, too.

Which reminds me, I haven’t watched this particular French romantic comedy in a long time…
